Signal sequences stop killer cells

Article Abstract:

Signal sequences in immunology were perceived as somewhat inert, but this view has changed with a finding that the have a function in immune recognition. The immune system is able to discriminate between self and non-self, in order for the body's own tissues not to be destroyed. Braud et al and Borrego et al have studied immune recognition for class 1 molecules of a family called the major histocompatibility complex. Signal sequences of other proteins may be involved in cellular regulation in a similar way.

Antigen presentation mediated by recycling of surface HLA-DR molecules

Article Abstract:

The HLA-DR molecules undergo a vigorous internalization and recycling on a human B-cell and transfected human fibroblasts. Recycling of the surface HLA-DR molecules correlates with the depiction of immunodominant epitopes in the haemagglutinin protein of influenza virus and in myelin basis protein. The internalization of HLA-DR molecules is avoided when either one of the alpha or beta cytoplasmic tails is truncated.
