The antioxidant function of many animal pigments: Are there consistent health benefits of sexually selected colourants?

Article Abstract:

The major groups of animal pigments, including melanins, pterins, porphyrins, psittcofulvins and flavonoids exhibit antioxidant activity in living systems. The extent to which sets of pigments serve antioxidant functions in colorful animals to which animals face a trade-off shunting pigments to physiological versus color displays is investigated.

Avoidance of intraspecific competition via host modification in a grazing, fruit-eating insect

Article Abstract:

Evidence of host plant modification is presented following an insect attack that may be associated with a reduction in intraspecific competition for food. It was demonstrated that feeding by larvae of the cranberry fruitworm, Acrobasis vaccinii, induces a change in fruit color of the cranberry fruits, Vaccinium oxycoccos.

Simulating pigeon navigation

Article Abstract:

A computer model of avian navigation based on Kramer's 'Map and Compass' model is presented. The models of bicoordinate navigation allow successful homing from unknown sites with realistic values for accuracy of the birds' senses.
