The cause of the fragile relationship between the Pacific El Nino and Atlantic Nino

Article Abstract:

A combination of observational and modeling analysis is employed to show that fragile relationship between the Pacific El Nino and Atlantic Nino is the result of destructive interference between atmospheric and oceanic processes in response to El Nino. Results highlight the importance of having an improved ocean-observing system in the tropical Atlantic, since the ability to predict the Atlantic Nino would not only depend on the knowledge of conditions in the tropical Pacific, but also an accurate estimate of the state of the upper ocean in the equatorial Atlantic.

Global interdecadal and century-scale climate oscillations during the past five centuries

Article Abstract:

The inter-decadal signal exhibits variability in tropics and subtropics whereas the century scale exhibits high amplitude variability in the Atlantic and Arctic regions. The variations give information on low-frequency El Nino/Southern Oscillation variability and low-frequency thermohaline circulation. The temperature proxy records of several centuries is analysed in a multivariate way.

Proxy evidence for an EL Nino-like response to volcanic forcing

Article Abstract:

Studies suggest that there exist a statistical connection between explosive volcanic eruptions and subsequent El Nino climate events. Two different palaeoclimatic reconstructions of El Nino activity and two-independent, proxy based chronologies of explosive volcanic activity are discussed.
