The decade of the brain: arguments that research support for neuroscience should quadruple miss the point and are not convincing

Article Abstract:

The National Foundation for Brain Research's claim that federal spending on brain research should be quadrupled since the total cost of brain disorders in the US is at least $401 billion annually is an ill-conceived strategy for justifying more funding. Although the $401 billion figure is accurate, the cold truth is that these disorders probably stimulate the economy as much as they dampen through such factors as creating jobs for hospital employees. The Foundation should rely on other justifications such as the likelihood of rapid progress in brain research.

A subset of NSAIDs lower amyloidogenic Abeta42 independently of cyclooxygenase activity

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the beneficial effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the treatment of mice suffering from Alzheimer's disease. The influence of the aggregation and deposition of the Abeta peptide on the disease is discussed.

Structural insights into the stereochemistry of the cyclooxygenase reaction

Article Abstract:

Research in mice has provided new insights into the co-crystal structures of apo-cyclooxygenase-2 in complex with arachidonic acid and prostaglandin. The molecular basis for the stereospecificity of prostaglandin G2 synthesis is suggested.
