The evolution of exaggerated sexual swelling in primates and the graded-signal hypothesis

Article Abstract:

Sexual receptivity in the females of many primate species is advertised with changes in the size and color of their perineal skin. A new study investigates the exaggerated sexual swellings in Old World monkeys and apes. Evidence suggests that such swellings are costly to females, in some instances increasing body weight by some 14%. Theories for the evolution of exaggerated swellings are reviewed and a new probabilistic model is presented.

Costs of acquiring and forgetting information affect spatial memory and its susceptibility to interference

Article Abstract:

The costs of acquiring and forgetting information were manipulated in an eight-arm radial maze memory task for pigs, Sus scrofa. The study indicates that small increases in the time costs of information acquisition during sampling visits decreased errors during recall trials, perhaps due to the enhanced attention to and encoding of information in memory.
