The family tree flowers

Article Abstract:

The origin and relationships of flowering plants are mysteries in evolutionary biology. Soltis and colleagues and Qui and colleagues have identified the closest living relatives of flowering plants using a multigene approach. They combined gene sequences from different genomes in individual species, with Qui and colleagues amassing a huge sequence database for 105 species, while Soltis and colleagues sacrificed sequence length to cover 560 species.

The origin and early evolution of plants on land

Article Abstract:

The origin and evolution of land plants during the mid-Palaeozoic era was an important event in the history of plant life, having a great effect on the global environment. A broader perspective on the origin of land plants has been provided by mid-Ordovician period fossil spore discoveries, advances in molecular systematics, and new data on Silurian and Devonian fossils.

Turning over a new leaf

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the evolution of leaves with broad, flat blades over a time scale of 40-million years. The influence of falling levels of carbon dioxide on the evolution of broad, flat leaves is discussed.
