The 'far east' of biological ethics

Article Abstract:

Japanese society's traditional lack of concern for bioethics has so far been little improved by participation in the Human Genome Project. Japan devotes less than 1% of its research budget to ethics compared to 5.2% in the US. This disregard for ethical matters results chiefly from the Japanese customs of giving sensei or experts the exclusive right to speak out and of accepting blindly whatever they may say. These customs have prevented the Japanese from dealing forthrightly with such issues as the transplanting of organs from brain-dead patients.

Germany gets warning on access to sequence data

Article Abstract:

International genetics research groups all over the world are objecting to German industry being given prior access to government funded project information. Geneticists from France, the United Kingdom and the US have all refused to provide Germany with access to the genetic sequencing information sent to the research ministry's research programme. Future discussions on the subject will attempt to resolve the matter. Until then, Germany will continue to contribute to the human genome project.

Industry slow to invest in German biotech...

Article Abstract:

German industry is hesitant to invest in the German Ministry of Research and Technology's newly launched genome program, though they are making substantial investments in United States for similar programs. The companies' contention is that they need sufficient time to determine the potential value of the program, and they feel that German resources are inferior to their US counterparts. The program has been promised a total of US$286 mill till 2003.
