The holes are defined by the string

Article Abstract:

The string theory enhances understanding of the quantum properties of black holes. The theory is unique because it enables unification of quantum mechanics and general relativity that are basic for understanding the laws of nature. The calculations, describing the quantum gravity effects of black holes with appropriate magnetic and electric charges, are based on collections of superstrings. These computations reveal that black holes follow the standard principles of quantum mechanics.

When symmetry breaks down

Article Abstract:

A radical idea supersymmetry is one idea about electroweak-symmetry, a new symmetry structure of elementary particles in which quantum variables is incorporated in the structure of space-time. The new symmetry prevents the particle interactions that would make the Higgs particle mass too big.

Unravelling string theory

Article Abstract:

String theory is the only known generalization of relativistic quantum field theory that makes sense. It proved to be remarkably rich and it led to penetrating insights on topics from quark confinement to quantum mechanics of black holes, to numerous problems in pure geometry.
