The ins and outs of fertilization

Article Abstract:

The sperm in fertilized eggs of 12 Drosophila species was examined to provide further insights on anisogamy. Three-dimensional reconstructions using anti-sperm antibodies and confocal microscopy were performed. Results supported theoretical models suggesting that males should not evolve a provisioning function of their sperm in cases of large anisogamy ratios. Findings also indicate that selection to provision offspring has not significantly influenced sperm length evolution in Drosophilia.

The S receptor kinase determines self-incompatibility in Brassica stigma

Article Abstract:

Self-incompatibility in Brassica is controlled sporophytically by the polymorphic S locus. It was found that transforming self-incompatible plants of Brassica rapa with an SRK28 and an SLG28 transgene led to expression of SRK28 alone, but not SLG28 alone, conferring the ability to reject self pollen on transgenic plants. SLG28 enhanced the ability of of SRK28 to reject S pollen.

Direct ligand-receptor complex interaction controls Brassica self-incompatibility

Article Abstract:

Research describing the self-incompatibility mechanisms of Brassica plants is presented. In particular the activity of the S-locus protein 11 in the prevention of self fertilization is investigated.
