The long-term strength of Europe and its implications for plate-forming processes

Article Abstract:

The estimates of variability of effective elastic thickness of the lithosphere T(sub e) are studied using the 'Bouguer coherence method' and the 'free-air admittance' method. The findings reveal when consistently formulated, both methods yield comparable T(sub e) values that correlate with geology, and that the strength of old lithosphere is much larger than that of younger lithosphere.

Asia squeezes Europe's lead in science

Article Abstract:

Asian nations such as China, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and India produced 25% of the World's research papers. Reasons for the higher publication share are discussed and it is believed that if this trend continues, China's research and development intensity would catch up with Europe's by 2010.
