The role of guesswork in conserving the threatened sand skink

Article Abstract:

Biologists' limited understanding of the optimal habitat for the threatened sand skink means conservationists have to use guesswork in choosing among habitat fragments to help the species recover. A comparison between habitats based on suggestions in literature and suggestions by experts showed experts predicted sand skink abundance much better than descriptions from literature.

Mitigation of habitat "take" and the core area concept

Article Abstract:

Bingham and Noon have suggested that the core area concept can be used to establish mitigation guidelines in habitat conservation plans. However, they fail to discuss how the core areas can be used appropriately to develop mitigation strategies. In addition, the target population may not be adequately represented by the calculation method proposed by Bingham and Noon.

Relevance of specimen citations to conservation

Article Abstract:

Issues discussed concern the inclusion of specimen citations in conservation biology publications. Topics addressed include the importance of citation lists to future biological studies, conservation priorities, and the knowledge of the geographic and morphological range of species.
