The 's' in Unesco seeks out a new role

Article Abstract:

An International Scientific Advisory Board has been created by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to expand scientists' role in a proposed reform of the agency's support of science. The board will advise the agency on the reform of its scientific efforts. It will also help draw up the agenda for a UN world science summit planned for 1999. Noted scientists from developed and developing countries make up the board, such as Nobel laureates Paul Berg, Jean Dausset, Georges Charpak, Carlo Rubbia and Ilya Prigogine. International Council of Scientific Unions Pres Werner Arber chairs it.

Trade war looms over gene-altered foods

Article Abstract:

The European Union's resolution and the public demand for labelling genetically-modified foods may cause a trade war with the United States. The move represents a challenge to the international trade law of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the practices of the regulatory bodies. The argument against labelling is that the process would stigmatize biotechnology and provide little useful knowledge to consumers. The WTO disallows the ban of imports or labelling, unless the countries can prove the imports' failure to meet agreed standards or the existence of risk.

EU urges national action to police imports of genetically altered maize

Article Abstract:

The European Commission has decided to ban the illegal import of genetically altered maize into the European Union (EU). The commission will take a decision after receiving reports from three scientific committees on food, animal nutrition and pesticides. The illegal imports question the limited powers of the commission to authorize EU legislations. The commission lacks power for ensuring the implementation of EU law. Limited inspection powers hinder the ability of the commission to prove infractions.
