The scratchpad of the mind

Article Abstract:

Two recent studies on the physiology of short-term memory, or working memory store, suggest that it is a short-term process, distributed throughout the brain, with different people using different areas depending on their memory strategies. A positron emission tomography scan while subjects were asked to remember locations, letters or words revealed what parts of the brain were involved in the task. A. Baddeley's proposed executive and slave systems do not seem to play a role.

Subgenual prefrontal cortex abnormalities in mood disorders

Article Abstract:

Pathological mood disturbances may follow either a bipolar or unipolar course, both of which can be heritable illnesses, linked to neural abnormalities. Research into brain activity, using positron emission tomographic images is described. An area of decreased activity in the pre-frontal cortex in both familial bipolar and unipolar depressives was found. The decrease is partly explained by the corresponding decrease in cortical volume.

Blood flow changes in human somatosensory cortex during anticipated stimulation

Article Abstract:

The various changes in the human secondary and primary somatosensory cortices are monitored through positron emission tomography measurements of blood flow in the brain. The measurements are performed when the cortices are stimulated and reveal that the potential signal enhancement in the brain cortex is dependent on the generalized suppression of the background activity which is influenced by the flow of blood in the brain.
