The tangled web of magnetism

Article Abstract:

Previous studies have inferred magnetic field strength and the energy density carried by relativistic electrons from analyses of synchrotron radiation from galaxies. These studies assumed that energy is equipartitioned between the particles and the field. This assumption of equipartition was abandoned in a study of synchrotron radiation realesed by relativistic electrons spiralling through the fields in galaxies characterized by star formation. The study shows that galactic magnetic fields are of stellar origin.

Misoscopic magnetism

Article Abstract:

Measurements have been made on superconducting aluminium discs as small as 0.3 mum, by Geim and colleagues, who have also shown the peculiar attraction that certain superconductors have for magnetic fields. They have shown paramagnetism in micrometre-scale aluminium discs, with transitions between different vortex states triggered by altering the magnetic field. The paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME) originated from a metastable state.

Cosmic waves in the lab

Article Abstract:

Use of Alfven-wave maser, the resonant amplification of a typical astrophysical wave, to study magnetic hydrodynamic turbulence for investigating earth-bound cosmic phenomena is described. The Large Plasma Device used to study Alfven waves is depicted.
