The use of landmarks to define territorial boundaries

Article Abstract:

Territorial male cicada killer wasps, Sphecius speciosus, preferentially locate their territorial boundaries at visual landmarks, according to research designed to establish whether these wasps would adopt artificial landmarks as boundaries. The main benefit of having landmarks at boundaries seems to be a cut in the cost of defending those boundaries against neighbours. The presence of landmarks seems likely to have a significant impact on the stability of any specific boundary.

Effects of landmarks on territorial establishment

Article Abstract:

A laboratory study was conducted to examine the effects of landmarks on defensive costs of a cichild fish, Steatocranus casuarius. The result revealed that the presence of landmarks appeared to make possible the division of the area available for settlement.

Mating craters of Cyathopharynx furcifer (Cichlidae) are individually specific, extended phenotypes

Article Abstract:

Cichlids build craters for mating. A study to analyze the crater-building behavior of cichlids is presented. Crater building is a trait specific to male cichlids.
