Green pastures for plant scientists

Article Abstract:

There has been a significant increase in postdoctoral opportunities for plant and agricultural research work in industry over research years. Many companies are now adopting a much more positive attitude to research, and are keen to recruit people who can contribute ideas to team-based research work. The flattening of hierarchical structures in industry means that individuals are now much more likely to be credited directly for their work, and they also have more freedom to move between projects.

Light in the gloom for cell biologists

Article Abstract:

US academic institutions should offer more places for biomedical PhDs in the decade from 1999. There has been an increase in US biomedical PhDs from 1981 to 1995, but not in tenured and tenure-track academic posts. Unrealistic career expectations have led to some postdocs becoming gloomy. There are opportunities from private sector companies such as Hoechst Marion Roussel. The age at which academics retire will have an impact on the number of jobs available in the US.
