Threatened native American plants

Article Abstract:

Several native American plants of genetic and historic value are threatened by extinction as they receive little protection from conservation programs. The sonoran panicgrass, the hohokam agaves and the okeechobee gourd are native to American soil but remain unlisted or are merely assigned a C-2 status. It is, therefore, imperative that higher funding and listing priorities within the US Fish and Wildlife Service, better coordination among protection agencies and the inclusion of Native Americans and conservationists from all sectors in the reauthorization of the Endangered Species Act be enforced.

The elimination of the Category 2 candidate species list: a prescription for environmental train wrecks

Article Abstract:

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has scrapped one of the two categories of at-risk species that it has developed to protect vulnerable plants and animals that have not yet been granted formal protections under the Endangered Species Act. The Service contended that it eliminated Category 2, which included species that 'might be' in danger and require more information, because it only caused confusion regarding the conservation status of the plants and animals belonging to this group.

In situ conservation of wild chiles and their biotic associates

Article Abstract:

Wild congeners of domestic crops are used as genetic resources for improving the resistance of cultivated crops to disease. Usually the seeds or tubers are collected from the wild and stored, but wild chiles were studied in their natural habitat. The distribution of chiles is a function of interactions between nurse plants, chemicals in the chiles and consumers, usually birds.
