Through a glass, lightly
Article Abstract:
It has been demonstrated that atomic motion below the glass transition temperature (Tg) involves single-atom hopping, while motion above Tg is more collective. This research concerns the diffusion of atoms in bulk metallic glass, but has implications for glass-forming systems as a whole. The study of metallic glasses is likely to bring further progress in investigating the range of coupling and decoupling behaviour that forms the glass transition.

Electrons in the looking glass
Article Abstract:
Manoharan and colleagues have developed a tiny laboratory for remote sensing, taking the form of an elliptical quantum corral. A cobalt atom was placed at one focus and was bombarded with electrons from a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) tip. The Kondo resonance was observed as a rise in resistance at low temperatures, manifesting itself as a blip in the conductance.

Too hot ot melt. Condensed matter
Article Abstract:
Rastogi and colleagues have observed inverse melting in a polymeric system. They studied phase transitions in the polymer poly(4-methylpentene-1) (P4MP1). The normal tetragonal crystal phase of the polymer was replaced by a hexagonal crystal phase at high pressure. The amorphous phase is shown to be structurally continuous with the liquid.
