Thyroid cancer risk to children calculated

Article Abstract:

The risk of thyroid cancers in children following exposure to iodine-131 has been re-evaluated using the original measurements taken in 1986. Doses received by children less than three years old were five times that received by adults. The child dose in the evacuated population was about 20 times that received by adults. The incidence of thyroid cancer in southern Ukraine for 9-18 year olds grew by 70% between 1986-1988 and 1991-1995. This is thought to reflect increased thyroid surveillance as well as radiation from Chernobyl.
