Tide of censure for African dams

Article Abstract:

Chinese built dams, particularly the Merowe project in Sudan, Africa could have devastating consequences for local communities. The billion-dollar Merowe project will double the amount of electricity production capacity in Sudan but this project suffers from drawbacks because it has not taken the necessary precautionary measures, which could result in environmental and social consequences due to flooding of vast areas of land.

Mostafa Moin, a paediatircian and medical researcher who served as Iran's minister for higher education and science, speaks about the prospects of science in Iran. He states that he wants to strengthen civil and scientific institutions and structures in Iran and encourage the youth to take up science.

Starlab, a privately funded research institute in Brussels, has run into financial difficulties. The laboratory was founded by Walter de Brouwer to encourage scientists with unconventional ideas.
