Tradition stands in the way of promotion

Article Abstract:

Germany's tradition of granting habilitation to postdocs for teaching purposes is based on standards of selection that vary from faculty to faculty. The process is a formality, which testifies the candidature of the Habilitand for a university career. The habilitation system hampers the careers of scientists without enhancing the quality or quantity of their research. Habilitation does not indicate the capability of an applicant to work in a multidisciplinary team. The procedure prevents universities from performing effectively in the international science arena.

External assessment pays national dividends

Article Abstract:

German science generally adopts a low-risk strategy, according to an assessment by foreign experts of the operation of the Max Planck Society and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, two German basic research organizations. This assessment has made it clear that there is an urgent need to address the poor career prospects of young scientists in Germany. The evaluation covered only a small part of the German research system, and its value was also restricted by the fact that the foreign experts inevitably introduced their own cultural biases.

Germany plans new aid for scientists in east

Article Abstract:

Germany's science council Wissenschaftsrat announced plans for a new research fund targeted at East German scientists facing job losses due to the termination of the interim aid to east Germany. Scientists relying on grants for their salaries will benefit from this research fund. The fund is also expected to improve competition for funds between researchers employed at national research centers in West Germany.
