Massive investment in science, technology and education by Irish government has increased the career opportunities for talented young scientists, engineers, business managers and multinational companies. Ireland's focus on industrial applications and economic growth has raised fears that curiosity driven basic research might become neglected but still science in Ireland has become high-profile and very international in remarkably short time with researchers expecting more consistent pattern of funding from government.

Arctic rockets give glimpse of the atmosphere's top layers

The middle and upper atmosphere is poorly understood compared to troposphere and stratosphere. A series of rocket-borne atmospheric reconnaissance missions in the Arctic Circle provide valuable data on middle and upper atmosphere.
