Trees under tension

Article Abstract:

There is no adequate theory to explain the phenomenon of water moving to the top of trees having xylem vessels with diameters of 100 micrometers. The capillary theory is insufficient because diameters of xylem vessels of these trees are too wide to lift water. The osmotic mechanisms theory is also inadequate. A more relevant method can be found in the cohesion theory of water transport. According to this theory, the tension of xylem conduits cause water to move upward. The tension is due to the evaporation of water from the leaf cell walls.

Scale invariance and universality of force networks in static granular matter

Article Abstract:

An unexpected connection between static granular matter and equilibrium critical phenomena is established. The observed scale invariance is in all aspects comparable to equilibrium criticality and defines a universality class of isotropic force networks.
