Two-dimensional structure of plant photosystem II at 8-A resolution

Article Abstract:

Electron crystallography has been used to produce a projection map of the structure at 8-angstrom resolution of two-dimensional crystals of a sub-core complex containing the reaction centre from spinach thylakoid membranes. This map can be directly compared with the structure of the photosystem II (PSII) supercore complex, which is made up of the light-harvesting complex II and a reaction-centre core. There is no CP43 in the PSII sub-core complex, so investigating the crystals produces no direct information about its location.

Structure at 0.85 A resolution of an early protein photocycle intermediate

Article Abstract:

A key early intermediate was trapped in the light cycle of photoactive yellow protein (PYP), and is structure was determined at better than 1A resolution. PYP ws found to progress through its photocycle through the use of thermal energy. Lowered temperatures restricts the height of energy barriers that can be cross, leading to photocycle arrest. Stored energy drives the PYP light cycle and the results provide a model for phototransduction.
