Two mechanisms of quantized calcium release in skeleal muscle

Article Abstract:

A dual-control model is proposed for discrete Ca2+ events from the sacroplasmic reticulum (SR). The Ca2+-events bind several observations concerning Ca2+ signalling in frog skeletal muscle. The model shows that secondary activation of SR calcium-release channels is triggered by the voltage-gated release process. It also confirms the existence and interaction of voltage- and ligand-gated elementary SR Ca2+-release events in skeletal muscle fibers.

Minimal cost per twitch in rattlesnake tail muscle

Article Abstract:

The minimization of the contractile use of muscle ATP reduces the cost/twitch to the lowest level and enables the high rates of rattling in a rattlesnake. Rattlesnakes produce a sustained, high frequency warning sound through rapid contraction of their tailshaker muscles. The ATP cost/twitch is 0.015 micro-mole ATP/gram muscle/twitch during rattling. A low myofibrillar content reduces the muscle stress and contractile cost.
