Two new iodinated compounds as serum markers in foxes

Article Abstract:

Iophenoxic acid (IPA) is used as a serum biomarker in red foxes because of its persistence in the bloodstream. It raises the level of an animal's protein-bound iodine in the blood, which can be measured. However, it is sometimes difficult to determine accurately how much IPA has been ingested. Two new iodinated analogues of IPA have been tested for their efficacy and compared to IPA. The propyl and ethyl analogues remained in the the blood for long periods and have the potential to be used as markers for foxes and other species alongside IPA.

Indices for predicting total body fat in red foxes from Australia

Article Abstract:

Total body fat was determined by chemical extraction to evaluate the accuracy of various fat indices for predicting total body fat in red foxes in New South Wales, Australia. Fat indices were found to vary in their ability to predict total body fat, using destructive indices. The best predictor of total body fat for all sexes was the kidney fat index combined with back fat thickness. Nondestructive indices using external morphological measurements were found to be poor predictors of total body fat.

Photo-identification of sea otters using nose scars

Article Abstract:

The use of naturally occurring nose scars to identify individual sea otters is evaluated in Simpson Bay, Alaska. Results concluded that this technique can be useful for individual identification of sea otters.
