Tycho's illusion and human cognition

Article Abstract:

The main cosmological alternative to the the Sun-based copernican system at the beginning of the seventeenth century for several decades, was a compromise system proposed by Tycho Brahe. In the Tychonic system the orbit of the Sun and Mars intersect, and the Sun moves around the Earth. The system is inconsistent with traditional views that the Sun and planets are carried by solid spheres, and the collision seen in the Tychonic diagram is an illusion that fooled experts for 400 years.

New troubles for inflation

Article Abstract:

Gravity in the very early Universe may have become repulsive for a brief period, and the ensuing 'inflation' may account for some of the fundamental features of the Universe. An analysis by Ferreira, Magueijo and Gorski may mean that inflation may not be so simple. They have developed a method to test for a specific form of non-Gaussianity, and the result is consistent with prior null results.

Density and destiny

Article Abstract:

Perlmutter and colleagues have reported observations of the explosion of a distant star, with its demise preceding the birth of our planet. The brightness against time of SN1997ap, at a high redshift z=0.83, were measured from the ground and from the Hubble Space Telescope. It is tentatively concluded that OmegaM is low, therefore if space is flat, there should be a cosmological constant.
