US aid to Russian weapons labs defended

Article Abstract:

The Initiatives for Proliferation Program, which involves collaboration between the US Dept of Energy and weapons scientists in the former Soviet Union, is not effective in getting funding to scientists, according to a report from the General Accounting Office. Indeed, this initiative is inadvertently supporting work that benefits Russia militarily. The report claims that most of the money spent on the initiative since 1994 has been taken by the Dept of Energy's US laboratories. This has been rejected by the Dept of Energy, which states that the General Accounting Office wrongly attributed a significant investment in telecommunications.

US researchers losing battle to hide their data from prying eyes

Article Abstract:

Scientists' representatives believe that the proposed rules to allow parties to examined federally fund data at any time would damage science and leave researchers in controversial fields open to harassment by special-interest groups. The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is hoping to lessen the impact of the provision by introducing a definition of scientific data that would exclude personal medical data and commercial proprietary information.

Battle lines drawn for make-or-break vote on the future of the SSC

Article Abstract:

The $620 million budget of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) project awaits the approval of the House of Representatives for FY 1994. A veto may mean the end of the project which has been openly supported by Pres Bill Clinton. A total of $1.5 billion has been spent on the project which has been completed by 20%. While the budget debates proceed, excavation continues for an 54-mile underground tunnel which will house the detector equipment.
