US court challenge may limit use of data in DNA banks

Article Abstract:

A suit filed by two Marine Corps members could lead to restrictions on the government use of DNA samples stores in genetic databanks. The complainants were court-martialed for refusing to provide samples for the Dept. of Defense's DNA Specimen Repository intended for identification purposes. They explained that sample collections should be voluntary and expressed concerns over exploitation of genetic data. They added that samples should be returned or destroyed upon an individual's departure from the military.

Coalition plans challenge to genetic patenting in the US

Article Abstract:

The Council for Responsible Genetics organized a meeting that will gather scientists, clergy members, activists, agricultural representatives, and advocacy groups for a discussion on how to promote public reaction toward the moral and ethical aspects of genetic patenting. The meeting in the Adirondack mountains follows the appeal of over 175 religious leaders to prevent the government from issuing patents for human genes, cells, organs and genetically engineered animals.

Challenge to growth hormone trial

Article Abstract:

A clinical trial of growth hormone in healthy, short children, run by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has been challenged by a lawsuit. The suit argues that the trial risks patients' physical and psychological health, and demands documentation supporting NIH's views; the trial was already been suspended in 1992 to consider such questions. Growth hormone is used in about 7,500 non-deficient children, although no studies confirm its safety or usefulness.
