US drug industry's research support

Article Abstract:

The US pharmaceutical industry is increasingly funding basic scientific research at universities and private institutions. The industry has become aware that basic research into disease function is essential to the discovery of marketable drugs. Industry grants take two forms: essentially charitable contributions to individuals and institutions that are not tied to production and contributions that are administered by the company's research division and are keyed to the company's interests. Most major companies have both programs.

Pfizer's decision to reduce its research has reflected the challenging outlook for the pharmaceutical industry. It is suggested that big pharmaceutical companies might start relying on partnerships with small and mid-sized drug and biotechnology firms in order to generate drug candidates.
