US legislator warns of hollow promises on research spending

Article Abstract:

The Congressional Research Service has stated that the budget resolution passed by the Senate on Apr 2, 1998, will lead to a small reduction in spending on civilian research and development in the period to 2003. Democratic Senator George Brown, for whom the Congressional Research Service undertook this analysis, believes that the budget resolution, not a separate bill proposed in the Senate under which research spending would double over 10 years, indicates the real intentions of top Republican senators regarding science.

Canadian institute seeks to secure its financial future

Article Abstract:

The Canadian government is assessing a proposal from the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIAR) under which it would match the money CIAR can raise from private sources and from the country's provincial governments. CIAR has been successful in creating internationally networked research groups, but has found it hard to secure a firm funding base. At present, its operating funds come from wealthy donors and provincial governments.

US think-tank queries cost of 'stockpile stewardship' programme

Article Abstract:

A report published by the Brookings Institution calls into question the costs of US nuclear weapons research, including the new stockpile stewardship programme. The cost of maintaining the US nuclear deterrent is $35 billion a year, with $4.5 billion spent on stockpile stewardship. The report questions why the stockpile stewardship budget is higher than during the Cold War.
