University challenge

Article Abstract:

A high-technology boom surrounds the University of Cambridge and the area is one of the fastest-growing and wealthiest in Europe, with an estimated 1,500 high-tech companies and this success is widely attributed to the transfer of ideas from the university into business. The university revised its rules to give it first option on the patent rights for any discovery made in its labs and Cambridge Enterprise, the unit established to run technology transfer and help young firms at the university will eventually become a free-standing company.
