Unreasonable hope for Rio fades

Article Abstract:

The UN Conference on Environment and Development, to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in Jun 1990, will probably fail to agree on how to deal with international environmental problems such as global warming. The inability to agree on an agenda suggests that expectations for the Conference are unrealistically ambitious. However, global warming remains a serious threat that should be the Conference's primary concern. An acknowledgment by all participating countries that global warming must be halted is a feasible and desirable outcome.

There's safety in numbers

Article Abstract:

Satellite observations by Russell and associates showing that CFCs are the dominant source of chlorine in the stratosphere will silence the opponents to the Montreal Protocol. Data show that 90% of the chlorine is in the form of HCl and 80% of the fluorine takes the form of HF. The average time for CFCs to cross 55 kms in the atmosphere is 5.9 years. CFCs are the source of about 80% chlorine, whereas volcanoes and sea spray contribute only 5%. Chlorine monoxide is the main ozone destroyer.

Hiding from the midday Sun

Article Abstract:

The European Arctic Stratospheric Ozone Experiment found evidence that stratospheric ozone levels over the northern latitudes decrease between December and February. This result, though widely misinterpreted by the press, should add impetus to international efforts to control chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), the gases that deplete ozone. The 'Earth Summit' due to start in the summer of 1992 should consider the idea of discouraging CFC pollution through taxation.
