Uterine and umbilical blood flows and net nutrient uptake by fetuses and uteroplacental tissues of cows gravid with either single or twin fetuses

Article Abstract:

Hereford and Charolais cows pregnant with single and twin fetuses were identified and subjected to an experiment to determine the effect of breed and number of fetuses on uterine and umbilical blood flows. On the 177th day of gestation, catheters were inserted into the cows' uterine vessels to monitor the degree of perfusion using deuterium oxide. There was a significant difference in blood perfusion among breeds and single fetuses had higher perfusion than twins. There was a corresponding increase in fetal and placental weight as well as growth rate with increased blood perfusion.

Level of nutrition and visceral organ protein synthetic capacity and nucleicacid content in sheep

Article Abstract:

Thirty-two lambs were studied to correlate the level of nutrition and visceral organ protein synthetic capacity and nucleic acid content for a period of 21 days. They were divided according to feed intake, either ad libitum or retricted to body weight maintainance and at 7 dayintervals, 4 lambs per group were destroyed to assess the visceral organ synthetic capacity by in vitro valine incorporation and by tissue RNA, DNA, andprotein contents. DNA, RNA, and protein concentration as well as protein synthetic capacity were equivocally higher among the lambs with liberal feed intake.

Lactation characteristics of nine breeds of cattle fed various quantities of dietary energy

Article Abstract:

Lactation patterns of nine cattle breeds fed increasing energy allowances were evaluated over four years using weigh-suckle-weigh procedures. Gelbvieh, Braunvieh and Pinzgauer had the highest peak daily lactation yields across the four energy intake levels. Hereford produced the least milk as compared to the other breeds. Energy allowances were directly related to milk yield for Braunvieh, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Limousin, and Pinzgauer. These data are important for energy supplementation programs in cattle raising.
