Vernalization requires epigenetic silencing of FLC by histone methylation

Article Abstract:

In Arabidopsis, the acceleration of flowering by prolonged cold, a process called vernalization, involves downregulation of the protein FLC, which would otherwise prevent flowering. This lowered FLC is maintained through subsequent development by the activity of vernalization genes.

Role of transposable elements in heterochromatin and epigenetic control

Article Abstract:

Heterochromation in Arabidopsis is determined by transposable elements and related tandem repeats, under the control of the chromatin remodeling ATPase DDMI using microarray analysis. It is reported that the transposable elements can regulate genes epigenetically.

Vernalization in Arabidopsis thaliana is mediated by the PHD finger protein VIN3

Article Abstract:

In biennials and winter annuals, flowering is typically blocked in the first growing season. To alleviate this block and permit flowering in the second growing season, exposure to the prolonged cold of winter, through a process called vernalization.
