Visionaries seek UK national strategy

Article Abstract:

The UK government should collaborate directly with research charities and industry, according to the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (ICRF). Both ICRF and the Cancer Research Campaign are looking for opportunities to develop their discoveries commercially. Imperial Cancer Research Technology, the technology transfer division of ICRF, is undertaking phase III clinical testing of Thermagyn, a drug based on a murine monoclonal antibody, in a joint venture with pharmaceutical concern Antisoma. Cancer Research Campaign Technology, the technology transfer unit of Cancer Research Campaign, is linking with Serotec.

French government tightens its grip on research priorities

Article Abstract:

France is to provide 500 million French francs a year in a centralized fund for basic research within the Ministry of Research. Much of the funding is new and forms part of the French civil research and development budget for 1999. A new advisory committee, the National Science Council, will decide on strategic research directions, and the process will depend on an open call for proposals.
