Visualization of convective fluid flow in a porous medium

Article Abstract:

Pattern formation in the Horton-Rodgers-Lapwood convection can be more effectively observed using a porous medium wherein the interface between solid and liquid is parallel to the boundaries of the system. Convection in this setup can be observed using conventional shadowgraph techniques. The stationary flow patterns are then compared with measurements of heat transport.

Contact force measurements and stress-induced anisotropy in granular materials

Article Abstract:

Measurements of the normal and tangential grain-scale forces inside a two-dimensional system of photoelastic disks that are subject to pure shear and isotropic compression is reported. Sheared systems have long-range correlations in the direction of force chains, whereas isotropically compressed systems have short-range correlations regardless of the direction.

Mixed predictions

Article Abstract:

A simple geometric model enables the analysis of slow granular mixing processes. Comparison of experimental calculations on thin rotating containers filled with colored particles shows that the mixing of homogeneous particles can be divided into geometric and dynamic parts.
