Waldegrave's dilemma

Article Abstract:

Plans for yet another reorganization of government-supported science in Britain prompted William Waldegrave, a leader of the effort, to invite advice on what the forthcoming white paper or policy statement should contain. The dubious nature of much of the advice Waldegrave got should persuade him to seek better counsel. In particular, Waldegrave should consider whether British science might prosper better by being left alone. Proposals for making science subservient to industry should be rejected.

University competition: Britain's newly diverse universities will be more vigorous rivals for each other's funds in years to come

Article Abstract:

Competition among English universities for research funding from the government is likely to intensify due to several factors. The decision to grant money to universities in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland separately will reduce the money available for English institutions. Moreover, the reclassifications of many polytechnics as universities will increase the number of applicants for funds. England's universities should protect this new diversity.
