Warming trends in Asia amplified by brown cloud solar absorption

Article Abstract:

Three lightweight unmanned aerial vehicles that are vertically stacked over the polluted Indian Ocean are used for measuring aerosol concentrations, soot amounts and solar fluxes. The occurrence of vertically extended atmospheric brown clouds over the Indian Ocean and Asia has indicated that atmospheric brown clouds have contributed to regional lower atmospheric warming trends and the combined warming trend of 0.25 K per decade has accounted for the observed retreat of the Himalayan glaciers.

Seeing in the dark

Article Abstract:

Antarctica's long winter months, when darkness falls, the sky becomes a spectacular canopy of stars and astronomers are braving the extreme cold to build telescopes that they hope would rival space observatories. Concordia, the first year-round station to be built in the interior, has proven to be one of the best places in the world to site an optical telescope, as there is very little atmospheric water vapour to distort incoming light.
