Water in mantle minerals

Article Abstract:

Olivine, a plentiful mineral in the Earth's mantle down to 400 kilometers, can contain large quantities of hydrogen within the mantle's water-abundant, high-pressure conditions. Q. Bai and D.L. Kohlstedt have made the first significant progress toward a quantitative understanding of the hydrogen component of the water reservoir believed to exist in the mantle. The discovery that the hydrous material in olivine is stable to a temperature of 1,300 degrees will aid in efforts to understand how processes in the Earth's interior affected the evolution of the oceans and atmosphere.

Rapid eruption of Skye lavas inferred from precise U-Pb and Ar-Ar dating of the Rum and Cuillin plutonic complexes

Article Abstract:

The greater than 1.5 km thick Skye main lava succession (SMLS) is part of the important surface expression of the magmatism linked to northeast Atlantic continental margin rifting caused by impingement of the Iceland mantle plume 63 Myr ago. Lava studies show the domination of transitional to alkali-basalts of the SMLS. The precises absolute radiosotopic ages for the Rum and Skye plutonic complexes are provided, and field links between the plutons and lavas are used to constrain the time-scale of lava eruption.
