What makes ATP synthase spin?

Article Abstract:

The ATP synthase enzyme undertakes catalysis as a molecular machine with an unusual internal rotary mechanism. New research using highly developed NMR and chemical probes indicates structural changes in a vital subunit that could prompt the rotation. The oligomeric model developed during this research has made it possible to identify the conformations of the protonated and depronated forms of the monomeric c subunit. Two ways in which rotation of this helix could drive rotation of the gamma subunit are presented.

What makes popcorn pop

Article Abstract:

An investigation was conducted to determine the mechanism behind the popping of popcorn. Measurements on expansion capacity and pericarp thickness showed a positive correlation, as did thermal diffusivity and expansion capacity. The pericarp characteristics rather than those of the endosperm seemed to be more important for popping. The thermal analysis and the pericarp heat transfer data showed that the pericarp acts as a cap in a popping mechanism that follows the pressure vessel model.

Modelling makes the money go round

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common in both the UK and the US for physicists to seek employment in the financial sector. In areas of the financial sector such as derivatives trading, the ability of physicists to reduce complex systems to their basic elements and describe them mathematically is very valuable. Physicists, mathematicians and statisticians are all in demand for their knowledge of stochastic processes, probability theory, numerical analysis and partial differential equations.
