Why Japan ought to legalize the Pill

Article Abstract:

The Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare is debating the legalization of steroid oral contraceptives, which will decrease the high percentage of abortions in Japan. Abortion is a legal method of birth control, and the number of abortions is more than twice the officially reported status. In Japan, concerns about the low birth rate and the aging population are obstructing the acceptance of the globally used oral contraceptives. Physicians earning huge amounts from conducting abortions and condom manufacturers are also against legalization of oral contraceptives.

Who will mentor the mentors?: In the wake of the tragic suicide of a US graduate student, research universities need to adopt a different system of monitoring the quality of graduate students' supervision

Article Abstract:

The suicide of a Harvard graduate student may lead research universities to adopt a different system of monitoring supervision. The student's suicide letter stated that an oversight committee would protect graduate students from abusive research advisors. However an alternative would be to handle complaints about abusive research advisors anonymously, lodging them outside the departmental setting. The main universities in the US do now require detailed evaluations by undergraduates of faculty.

Ethical discourse by science-in-fiction: It can be difficult to discuss ethical dilemmas in the academic environment. One way of doing it is through 'science-in-fiction'

Article Abstract:

Medicine 256 is a new graduate course offered under the auspice of the Center for Biomedical Ethics of Stanford University's School of Medicine in California. Its formal title is ethical discourse through science-in-fiction, whereby all aspects of scientific behaviour and facts have an accurate and plausible description. It creates a forum for open discussion and debate, and addresses the issues of communication by scientists with their colleagues and the general public.
