Woman's meat, a man's poison

Article Abstract:

Women rarely develop hereditary haemochromatosis (HH) before menopause because the disorder is treated through periodic blood letting. HH results from deficient iron metabolism leading to iron accumulation in specific body tissues. This causes liver function failures, tumors, diabetes and arthritis. The disease has advantages for women, especially during pregnancy and childbirth, because it maintains high iron stores in the body. Though no gene has been implicated in its etiology, chromosome 6 may be a likely candidate.

Genome analysis

Article Abstract:

The use of sequence tagged connector method for sequencing the human genome has certain drawbacks. The quality of the library used as a shared public resource decides the accuracy of the results. DNA regions are not found in properly grown cosmid and yeast artificial chromosome libraries and high-copy cosmid-replication systems are intrinsically unstable. The distribution of ends of DNA molecules produced by random shear of total genomic DNA is unknown.

The book of genes

Article Abstract:

The first chapter of a new book comprises the DNA sequence of most of human chromosome 22, and provides the inaugural results of the Human Genome Project. The DNA sequence will eventually provide a list of proteins and ultimately, their functions. The DNA sequence will also be a framework on which to place the changes in the sequence present in each person.
