Women in science: discrimination against women in science is wrong but so is a quota system

Article Abstract:

The National Science Foundation's (NSF) policy of not financing conferences that lack women as speakers promotes rather than prevents sex discrimination because it implies that women in science need special help and are therefore not as able as their male colleagues. NSF based its policy on the assumption that any scientific conference ought to include female participants since women earn 1/3 of biological doctorates. However, efforts to promote women in science should preferably occur inside the scientific community.

Involvement of visual cortex in tactile discrimination of orientation

Article Abstract:

Visual imagery is implicated in tactile perception of certain object properties, including orientation, shape and size. The disrupting function of the occipital cortex is found to interfere with the tactile discrimination of grating orientation (TMS). TMS over the somatosensory cortex prevented discrimination of grating texture and orientation, suggesting that visual cortex is involved in tactile discrimination of orientation.

Privatization goes wrong

Article Abstract:

The privatization of the electricity industry in Britain has been facing difficulties due to a lack of expertise of the concerned private companies. Even the denationalized railway system is facing problems because of the need for continued government subsidies. However, the privatization has served certain purposes in overcoming large financial losses incurred by the public sector and ensuring proper economic management.
