Wrestling with kinesin

Article Abstract:

Two separate groups of researchers have provided measurements of the single-motor force generated by micro-tubule-based motor protein kinesin, an endeavour undertaken without success by many of the past few years. The results of the two papers are irreconcilable, meaning they each need to undergo further scrutiny. Motor proteins are enzymes that convert chemical energy to the mechanical work involved in cellular motility. The long-term goal is information on how to measure individual motors as they hydrolyse molecules of ATP and work against known loads.

Making connections count

Article Abstract:

New research has provided biologists with new insights on the physical linkages between molecular components connected with force transmission. One study showed that intracellular motor forces are transmitted to extracellular substrata after a ligand in the extracellular matrix binds integrins and engages the cytoskeletal clutch. Another study discovered that a proteolytic enzyme inhibitor called plasmINNgen activator inhibitor-1 acts as a blocking agent by reducing the ability of smooth-muscle cells to migrate on vitronectin-coated substrata.
