You can help elephants

Article Abstract:

The New York Zoological Society project The Wildlife Conservation Society is a conservation organization that is working to preserve African elephants. The main problem faced by the elephant populations of Africa is man. Mankind has been reproducing unchecked and exploiting the elephant for hides and ivory. In the late 1970s it became clear that the herds had suffered from ruthless poaching. This has largely been halted by the worldwide ivory trade ban of 1989. The elephant herds are recovering and re-populating areas they left, but achieving a balance with their main predator, man, has just begun.

Fingerprinting ivory

Article Abstract:

Genetic fingerprinting of ivory may provide a forensic technique to distinguish between poached and legally obtained African ivory. The genetic material of African elephants has been shown to have significant correlations with the area of their origin. Adequate genetic material may be obtained from raw tusks for testing purposes. DNA has not yet been obtained from finished ivory to allow testing of carved products. The testing method should prove economically feasible and may make it possible for the ivory trade to be resumed in parts of southern Africa.
