The high cost of death
Article Abstract:
Prosecuting and penalizing capital crimes costs the state of California anywhere from $1.8 to $45 million. The appellate process isusually the most expensive and the longest part of litigation. However, attorneys handling death penalty appeals complain of Supreme Court payment guidelines that place hourly fees at $75 per hour as against the standard $200-300 per hour rate charged by attornneys to their clients. Furthermore, lawyers are worried about the Supreme Court decision that disallows the California Apellate Project from recruiting lawyers to handle death penalty appeals.
