Lost Hacienda: Scholars reconstruct the lives of laborers on a Yucatan plantation
Article Abstract:
Hacienda Tabi, which was once the largest sugar plantation in MexicoEs Yucatan Peninsula, has turned into weathered ruins with a 22,000-square-foot residence reflecting the enormous wealth of the plantation's owners during its peak time. The Cultural Foundation of Yucatan, a nonprofit organization based in the state's capital of Merida, is continuing efforts to restore the Hacienda as an educational center and staging point for ecotourism.

The year 2005 marks the centennial anniversary of the first modern excavations at the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan, Mexico, a towering stone structure that has become an icon in the collective imagination of millions. Excavation work at the 1,800 year-old monument in a way, reflects the development of state archaeology in Mexico and serves as mirror for how the country itself has changed and developed over the century.
