Mystery of the Maya facade; astute detective work gives new meaning to a looted artwork
Article Abstract:
The desciphering of a Maya facade which before its looting graced a temple or palace at Placeres, near the better-known site of Calakmul, is discussed. The facade is thought to depict an encounter between the kinds of Calakmul and Tikal, who thought of themselves as the scions of two primordial creation places, "K'an" and "Pu," connected in their time with El Mirador and Teotihuacan.
