Mythology and folktale typology: chronicle of a failed scholarly revolution
Article Abstract:
The Grimm brothers initiated the study of international folktales and also those among ancient Greeks and Romans. Soon after, Antti Aarne added numbers to create a reference system for international narratives. During the early part of the century an unsuccessful attempt was made by folk-narrative scholars to incorporate classical stories into an international context.

A note in favor of motif indexes
Article Abstract:
Motif indexes rely on genre, theme or mental images and help students examine subject matter. While critics say they may be time-consuming or outdated and non-original, another perspective is that motif indexes respond to new problems and trends. Motif catalogues can also be created to answer specific themes or genres.
